In 2008, North Carolina ranked 17th highest for adult diabetes prevalence among all states in the U.S.
An estimated 643,000 North Carolinians or 9.3 percent of the total state adult population had diagnosed diabetes in 2008. Another 232,000 were estimated to have undiagnosed diabetes. There were an estimated 376,000 adults with prediabetes in the state. Altogether, an estimated 1.25 million adults in North Carolina had some form of hyperglycemia (high blood sugar levels) in 2008.
