Role of the Physician in the Care of the Student with Diabetes

  • Provide regular and ongoing medical care to the child with diabetes and make referrals to other health care specialists (i.e., a dietitian, diabetes educators, etc.) when needed.
  • Take part in development of the Diabetes Care Plan with the parent, the school nurse and other school personnel.
  • Sign the Diabetes Care Plan as well as any updates to the plan.
  • Talk regularly with the parent and the school nurse or principal (granted that an informed consent or confidentiality form has been signed and is on record).
  • Update the Diabetes Care Plan with the parent as needed throughout the school year and inform the school nurse or principal immediately.
  • Support parents and act as a resource for them and the schools.
