Who is at Risk?
Diabetes is a serious disease that can lead to blindness, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and amputations. Diabetes affects approximately 16 million Americans, and one in three don't even know it.
You are at risk if:
- You are African American, Native American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian American or a Pacific Islander
- You are overweight
- You are not physically active
- You are over age 45
- You have a family member with diabetes

The American Diabetes Association along with a company called Archimedes (affiliated with Kaiser Permanente) to develop software that assesses personal risk of diabetes and of diabetes related complications. The software is called, PhD and is located on the American Diabetes website. In order to access the software, you will need to establish a user id and password. You will also need to have your latest A1c value, your average blood pressure, your LDL and HDL cholesterol values and the names of your diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol medicines.
