The project is a collaboration with the Diabetes Prevention & Control Program, Division of Aging and Adult Health Services, and the NC Public Health Foundation (administrator of the grant funds). This one-year planning grant was awarded in January 2009 by the Kate B Reynolds Charitable Trust.   Living Healthy: For Men. By Men. addresses the prevention and control of diabetes and other chronic diseases (including heart disease, high blood pressure, lung disease, stroke, etc.) for African American men living in Lenoir and Pamlico Counties.  The one-year planning project involves:

  • Living Healthy Committees.  Planning committees in each county, comprised of African-American male residents identified by other community members as influential role models. Goals of each committee are established by the members.
  • Focus Groups and Key Informant Interviews to learn about participants’ concerns related to health, availability of local healthy living programs, interest in taking healthy living programs.
